Chili's will be donating all of their proceeds from September 28th, to St. Jude's.

Go eat. Buy the t-shirt. Color a pepper.

Let's raise some money for a good cause!

I heard about this, but unfortunately the nearest Chilli's is 1.5 hours away so I couldn't make it there on a weekday. Now is St. Jude the philanthropy of choice for ESA? I know Tri Delta has a strong affiliation with them, but I haven't heard of other greek organizations who also were. I always have an eye out for St Jude functions because I had a friend in high school who died of cancer and St Jude was the only group left to help (especially after his insurance dropped him!).

Yes, St. Jude is ESA's philanthropy, as well. We adopted St. Jude in 1972, and we were their organization of the year in 2007.

I couldn't make it to a Chili's that day either, but I did manage to snag a t-shirt. They're still selling them, and you can get them online. The best part is, they are only $12.

I'm so glad that St. Jude could be there for your friend. I'm a cervical cancer survivor, so I know what a hassle insurance is. Even though I have great insurance, it still doesn't pay for my oncologist because he's "out of network". I can't help it that he's the only one who was qualified to take my case within a hundred mile radius.

Oh I hate that story for you :( Even a small portion of a large treatment can be so expensive and bankrupt a family. I know the film is slanted severely, but I got so emotional watching Michael Moore's Sicko, I couldn't believe how readily available and FREE health care was in other countries.

Don't believe Moore's propoganda. It's lies.

Trust me, you do NOT want socialized health care. I have a friend in England whose mother needed a knee replacement. She got on the list and was scheduled for a TWO YEAR wait! Her leg got so bad and she was in so much pain, she then started to have to use a walker.

By the time her surgery rolled around, she now needed a hip replacement from favoring her other leg.

THEN.. my friend (also living in England) had tooth pain. She had to wait two weeks to see the dentist. The dentist then told her she needed a root canal, but the first appointment was for 4 months. She waited in agony for 4 months. By this time, her tooth was so bad, they ended up pulling it. Oh, but wait.. there's more. They don't pay for implants, so now she has a gap where her tooth should be.

OK.. more stories.. my dentist is from Cuba. She tells me that the only people who get decent health care are the political elite. She sends anti-biotics, and even anesthesia over to her family in Cuba so that they can get some of the health care they need.

That's just healthcare. They have no diapers, not even toilet paper! Yeah, I want to move to Cuba, don't you?

As for the USA. NOBODY gets turned down for health care. If you can't afford it, you can get Medicaid. It's also against the law to be denied treatment in an emergency room regardless of your ability to pay.

Moore is a lying ass.

Uhm, BA, I'm not sure what part of the US you live in but I have repeatedly been turned away for healthcare because I had no health insurance. They tell you to basically get out of their hospital and go to a free clinic - and let me tell you, I would much rather wait two weeks for a doctor than get health care from the doctors there who do not care if they kill you because you are a poor and therefore worthless person to them. They all assume that you're some crack head and will just write you prescriptions for pain killers because they assume that that's the only reason you came to the hospital to begin with. Every time I've been there they've barely even spoken to me or tried to find out what's wrong, they just want to give me an Rx for something I don't need (I can't even get an antibiotic from these a-holes!) and all but scream out "NEXT!"

I've had shattered wisdom teeth for 3 years. No dentist will help me because I don't have health insurance (even now with the military, the dental insurance takes a lot longer to get) and I have been in frequent pain - so bad that I cannot function some days. A two week to four month wait would be a dream compared to the American health care nightmare I've been living with!

If we can function with a socialized Fire Department, Police Department, Post Office, Library, and so many other things, I think the health care will be a much better benefit for us overall. And in my opinion, we're already paying for the people who won't work so that they can live on wellfare, so maybe if the health care was a given it might give them some incentive to get a job. As long as the drug companies can set their own prices, and doctors and hospitals can charge whatever they want for health care we're all screwed.

Were you in the ER for an emergency (chest pain, broken limb, stab wound, can't breathe) or were you there for a non-emergency (cough, cold, headache)?

Socialized fire, police, library and post office? Can you explain what you mean?
